EU law determines that an insured person from any EU country who, due to certain circumstances (depending on his or her state of health and illness) is unable to receive the healthcare in a timely manner in the country where he or she resides, when being authorized by the competent institution can receive the relevant services in another EU country, as well as in Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, Switzerland or the United Kingdom.

Therefore, if you are unable to receive the required healthcare in time in the country where you are covered by social security and wish to receive treatment in Lithuania, apply to your competent institution for an authorisation (the portable document S2 or form E112). We also recommend you coordinate the time of providing medical services with the relevant Lithuanian healthcare institution in advance.

Please, note that holders of the document S2 (the form E112) can receive healthcare services paid for from the Compulsory Health Insurance Fund (CHIF) budget in medical institutions that have a contract with the territorial health insurance fund. This right does not cover the services provided by medical institutions acting outside the public health system, for which you have to pay yourself, as well as reimbursement of patient co-payments and transportation costs if you have to travel to the country where you are insured due to illness.

For planned healthcare services, please, contact the medical institution and present your identity document and document S2 (the form E112) at the reception. The costs of healthcare services provided to you on the basis of the document S2 (the form E112) will be covered by the Lithuanian territorial health insurance fund from the budget of the CHIF. Later Lithuania will be reimbursed by the competent institution of the country where you are insured.
