Orthodontics is a range of specialist services for dental and jaw abnormalities that are covered by the national health insurance funds from the Compulsory Health Insurance Fund (CHIF). Orthodontic treatment can only be prescribed and applied by a doctor orthodontist.

A dentist of a primary healthcare institution, where the child is registered, will refer a child to a doctor orthodontist for a consultation if necessary. This doctor decides whether the child needs an orthodontic device. Orthodontic devices are covered by the CHIF, but only for certain diseases and conditions. Orthodontic devices are included in the list of medical devices reimbursed from the CHIF and their basic prices, approved by order of the Minister of Health. This list sets out the conditions for prescribing orthodontic devices and basic prices. In all cases, the need for treatment is decided by the attending physician after assessing the patient's state of health.
