Hearing aids, which are paid for by the health insurance funds from the Compulsory Health Insurance Fund (CHIF), are prescribed for hearing-impaired adults and children, who are covered by compulsory health insurance. People with hearing impairment, who wish to receive a hearing aid reimbursed by the Health Insurance Fund, should first contact their family doctor. Once they have received a referral from their family doctor, they will need to see a specialist doctor for a consultation. After determining that a hearing aid is necessary and taking into account the degree of deafness, the specialist doctor will specify which type of hearing aid is needed: 4 types of hearing aids can be fitted for children and 5 types for adults. Only an otorhinolaryngologist, can prescribe a hearing aid that is 100% reimbursed by the CHIF, following established medical indications.
