The new Compulsory health insurance council takes office: chairman elected

The lead of the Compulsory health insurance council (CHIC) has been taken by Aurimas Pečkauskas, Vice-Minister of Health. This decision has been made after yesterday’s vote during the first meeting of the newly-formed CHIC.

The configuration of the new CHIC has been confirmed earlier. As always, the council consists of 15 members: representatives of the Ministry of Health (MH), Ministry of Social Security and Labour, Ministry of Finances, Office of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania and the National Health Insurance Fund, also five representatives of employers and employees. This configuration ensures equal representation of all stakeholders.

For the next two years, the representatives of the insured will include representatives from organisations, defending the interests of the patients, pensioners and people with disabilities. They also include representatives of the Lithuanian Trade Union Confederation, Lithuanian Youth Council and organisations that promote a healthy lifestyle. Meanwhile, interests of the employers will be represented by council members from the Lithuanian Association of Municipalities, employer organisations and personal health care institution organisations and employee organisations.

It is hereby noted that CHIC membership is open only for persons of impeccable reputation and for no more than two consecutive terms, i.e. no longer than four years.

This council is a collegial advisory institution, the configuration and provisions of which are approved by the Minister of Health. CHIC discusses prospective and current compulsory health insurance issues, making proposals to the MH regarding the list of health care services, covered from the Compulsory Health Insurance Fund (CHIF). The Council also provides an opinion regarding the CHIF draft budget, makes proposals regarding the legislation, applicable to the compulsory health insurance, etc.
