The health insurance funds: more patients will be able to receive the free vaccine
More people considered to be at high risk can now be vaccinated against pneumococcal infection free of charge, says the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) under the Ministry of Health. For such patients, the vaccines are paid for by the Compulsory Health Insurance Fund.
The list of people at risk of pneumococcal infection has been expanded following the amendments to the Order of the Minister of Health entered into force on 10 January. From now on, not only children with bronchial asthma but also adults will be able to be vaccinated against pneumococcal infection at the expense of the Compulsory Health Insurance Fund (CHIF). All patients with diabetes will also be able to be vaccinated free of charge.
The health insurance funds note that patients receive a single dose of this vaccine, except for cases after haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. In this case, both children and adults are vaccinated with 4 doses of the vaccine according to a specific schedule.
People at high risk who wish to be vaccinated against pneumococcal infection should contact their family doctor.
According to the NHIF, almost 8 000 people were vaccinated against pneumococcal infection in Lithuanian healthcare institutions last year. This required EUR 380 000 from the CHIF.
