Studying abroad and CHIF: things to know

Experts of the health insurance funds would like to remind the school graduates that leaving school is not only about starting a new stage of life, but also taking up new obligations of taking care of one’s compulsory health insurance (CHIF).

School students signing agreements to start their full-time studies at Lithuanian or EU, EEE or Swiss universities, or students that continue their full-time studies in Lithuania and the rest of the above-mentioned countries, have their CHIF covered by the state of Lithuania.

Youth that has graduated from school and chose to study abroad is kindly reminded of the things that the future students should know and take care of before they leave.

  • Going to study full time at universities in the EU, Norway, Lichtenstein, Iceland or Switzerland, they must provide their territorial NHIF division with a document, issued by their educational institution. They can do this by coming to the office or logging on to the e-delivery, by mail, through an authorised person or e-mail.
  • There is no need to declare the departure upon leaving for these countries. Otherwise your CHI coverage will be void.
  • Pupils leaving to study in the EU under general education programmes as of 23 January 2021 must provide their territorial NHIF division with a document, issued by the target educational institution.
  • Student CHI coverage is certified for a single academic year, thus they must submit a document, issued by their educational institution in the EU every academic year.
  • Students on internship or studying abroad based on exchange programmes are also covered by CHI by the state and don’t need to take care of anything.
  • Whenever planning a trip, do not forget to order a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or generate and download a certificate on your own. ECHIC certificate can be ordered/generated by logging on to the https://e.vlk.lt system.
  • Persons leaving to study in third countries, such as the United States of America, Canada or Australia, should take care of their health insurance themselves and get a private insurance. Upon departure it is important to declare one’s departure in order to evade an accumulating CHI debt.
  • Youth that has started their studies in the United Kingdom (UK) after 1 January 2021 should know that they are not entitled to a CHI insurance coverage by the state any more. They must make the payments themselves. Although the youth studying at UK universities do not get the benefit of a state-covered CHI, they can apply to appropriate UK institutions regarding health tax compensation.
