Rent of enteral feeding pumps will be reimbursed as of autumn

The Council of the Compulsory Health Insurance Fund (CHIF) has agreed that from the first of September this year, patients who need enteral nutrition will be able to rent enteral feeding pumps, paid for from the budget of the Compulsory Health Insurance Fund (CHIF), which are necessary to ensure their home healthcare. The National Health Insurance Fund under the Ministry of Health estimates that the cost of such rents would amount to around EUR 1.3 million per year and would help around 700 Lithuanian patients who need this medical tool due to their health conditions.

On 30 May 2024, the Commission on the list of medical devices necessary for home healthcare approved the inclusion of enteral feeding pumps with and without extension system in the list of medical devices to be rented from the CHIF. The new addition is expected to be reimbursed from 1 September 2024.

These medical devices will be used for patients with a gastrostomy or ileostomy or those with a nasogastric or nasojejunal tube. Enteral feeding pumps will only be available for prescription by a consortium of doctors from tertiary level inpatient and outpatient dietetic and paediatric gastroenterology services.

The Commission for the Setting of Base Prices for the Rental of Medical Devices for Home Health Care, after assessing the data on the prices of these pumps, has determined that the base monthly rental price for an enteral feeding pump with an extension system would be around EUR 165 and without an extension system would be around EUR 143.

It is estimated that these pumps will be used by around 700 patients per year, and the cost to the CHIF budget of these new measures will be around EUR 430 thousand over 2024. In 2024, the CHIF budget decided to allocate EUR 7.33 million for the renting of medical devices, of which EUR 3.4 million had already been spent by July.
Giedrius Baranauskas, Head of the Medical Devices Reimbursement Division of the National Health Insurance Fund, notes that the inclusion of the new devices in the list will allow for better home health care for patients.
