Reimbursement for more healing bandages

Good news for patients that have to treat their wounds for a long time and their relatives. As of 1 July 2022, compulsory health insurance-covered persons will receive more reimbursed bandages than before. For this purpose, the Compulsory Health Insurance Fund (CHIF) is planning to allocate as much as 400 thousand Eur in the second half of the year.

As of now, the National Health Insurance Fund under the Ministry of Health (NHIF) will reimburse 15 hydrocolloid, silicone or other dressings for each wound or ulcer every month.

Just like before, healing bandages will be reimbursed to patients for the treatment of epidermolysis bullosa wounds, bedsores, trophic ulcers under 5 mm, ulcers caused by radiation treatment (due to a malignant tumour), and for the treatment of children's burns.

NHIF experts are kindly reminding that the first prescription for reimbursable MAM must be issued by a general or specialising physician, as namely these physicians diagnose the disorder, which may make the patient eligible for reimbursable measures. Later these prescriptions may be issued by nurses.

The number of patients using reimbursed medical aids last year was nearly 186 thousand. The reimbursement of treatment bandages alone required 2.7 million Eur from the CHIF funds, which is 430 thousand Eur more than in 2020. 313 thousand Eur more to cover the patient co-payments for the healing bandages last year was allocated from the state budget.
