More aids will be reimbursed for people with diabetes

The Ministry of Health is working to improve the situation for patients with diabetes. From 1 July, the scope of reimbursed aids for them will increase. The biggest change is that adults will receive reimbursement for the needles needed to administer their medicines, which has not been available until now. In total, the changes will affect almost 30,000 patients.

According to the Minister of Health Arūnas Dulkys, diabetes is one of the fastest spreading diseases in Lithuania, with over 100,000 people already living with the disease today. “In order to improve the control of the disease, the scope of reimbursed aids has been increased. In total, more than EUR 2 million will be allocated, and the changes will affect almost 30,000 people. These changes will contribute to ensuring a fulfilled life for people with diabetes”, says the Minister for Health.

For people aged 24 and over with type 1 diabetes who use only diagnostic strips to measure their glycaemia and who are not reimbursed for the cost of insulin pumps with integrated continuous glucose sensors or for the cost of a continuous glucose monitoring system, an increase of up to 300 more strips will be granted per year, i.e., up to 1,200 strips per year. Before the change, 900 strips per year were reimbursed for this group of patients.

People aged 24 and over with type 2 diabetes and who use insulin will be reimbursed twice as many strips as before, up to 600 strips per year.

Changes will also affect reimbursement for needles. Currently, insulin needles are only reimbursed for children, but they will also be available to adult patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes who use a special syringe to inject insulin. One insulin needle per day will be reimbursed.

All changes will come into force and the reimbursements will apply as of 1 July.

These changes will affect almost 30,000 patients, and the reimbursement of these aids will cost just over EUR 2 million of the Compulsory Health Insurance Fund budget.
