Medical rehabilitation services more easily available to independence defenders

From 1 August it will be easier for Lithuanian independence defenders and other victims of the 11-13 January 1991 and the subsequent USSR aggression to access medical rehabilitation services. For these patients, the Compulsory Health Insurance Fund will cover not only outpatient but also inpatient medical rehabilitation services, including accommodation and meals in a rehabilitation facility.

From now on, they will be provided with comprehensive free rehabilitation for neurotic, stress and somatoform disorders or long-term personality disorders following a disaster. As a reminder, until now, these mental and behavioural disorders have been treated free of charge only on an outpatient basis, while patients wishing to receive inpatient services in a rehabilitation facility had to pay their own living and boarding costs.

Patients will be able to receive these inpatient medical rehabilitation services in personal health care facilities licensed to provide inpatient psychosocial rehabilitation services or licensed to provide inpatient services for nervous system diseases. They will be available both after inpatient and outpatient treatment, in addition to the first phase of medical rehabilitation. Patients are invited to contact their family doctor or treating physician to discuss the need for these services.

Please note that medical rehabilitation services are not only based on the patient's diagnosis but also on the degree of impairment of biosocial functions. The attending (or family) physician refers the patient to a physiotherapist for consultation and subsequently prescribes medical rehabilitation treatment, if indicated, based on the conclusion of the consultation.

According to the data provided by the municipal administrations, a total of 596 people have been granted legal status as defenders of independence and other victims of the 11-13 January 1991 and the subsequent USSR aggression.
