Insulin pumps will be available to all patients with type 1 diabetes

With the new legislation coming into force later this year, all people with type 1 diabetes will be able to claim state compensation for renting insulin pumps. The new legal framework for the reimbursement of insulin pumps is scheduled to enter into force in Q2 2022. This year's Compulsory Health Insurance budget provides for €4.4 million for the reimbursement of insulin pumps more than in 2021.

Currently, the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) reimburses the cost of renting insulin pumps for persons under 24 years of age who are covered by compulsory health insurance and for pregnant women, women planning to become pregnant or people who are on the waiting list for pancreatic islet transplants. Other sick persons were able to purchase insulin pumps at their own expense.

With the entry into force of the new regime, patients with type 1 diabetes, regardless of age, will be able to be reimbursed for an insulin pump with a glycaemic evaluation function using glucose diagnostic strips (reimbursable monthly basic rental price of € 137.41) or for an insulin pump with a function of glycaemic evaluation and insulin injection suspension, in the event of a reduction in glycaemia using a continuous glucose sensor (reimbursable monthly basic rental price of € 449.50).

The insulin pump helps patients get closer to this quality of life as if they had a healthy pancreas. The pump regularly releases small amounts of insulin and extra amount during meals 24 hours a day. For those who use insulin, it helps to significantly reduce the number of insulin injections (sticks) and allows them to lead a full life, reduce glucose fluctuations, which puts them at greater risk of complications, and other side effects.

About 7,000 people in Lithuania suffer from type 1 diabetes. Those wishing to have their insulin pump rental reimbursed by the state will need to contact their GP, who will inform the patient about the procedure of reimbursing for costs of insulin pump rental.

The situation of people with diabetes in Lithuania is constantly improving - from 1 July 2021, compensating insulin pump replacement parts for those suffering from type 1 diabetes, regardless of age, was started.

We also remind you that if you feel or suspect signs of diabetes, it is necessary to check your blood glucose in case of risk factors. Complications can be avoided by early diagnosis of diabetes.
