During this period, more than 21,000 people in Lithuania turned to doctors for help, and EUR 21.9 million were needed to reimburse services and medicines.
According to doctors, assisted reproductive technology is the most effective treatment for infertility and has been used worldwide for more than 40 years. As many as a quarter of all couples of childbearing age experience infertility.
The specialists of the Health Insurance Fund remind that people wishing to receive assisted reproduction services paid for by the Fund should first go to their family doctor or an obstetrician-gynaecologist and receive a referral for a consultation on assisted reproduction.
Services can be provided at a medical facility of your choice, but it is essential that the facility you choose has a contract with the Health Insurance Fund, as only then will the costs be reimbursed by the Fund.
The Vilnius University Hospital Santaros Klinikos, the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Kauno Klinikos, UAB Baltijos ir Amerijos terapijos ir chirurgijos klinika, UAB Jolsana, UAB Kardiolita, UAB Northway medicinos centrai, Lithuanian, American and Israeli UAB Vaisingumo klinika, UAB Vaisingumo centras have concluded contracts for the provision of assisted reproduction services with the Health Insurance Funds.
One obstetrician-gynaecologist consultation per woman and man for assisted reproduction, with laboratory or instrumental tests, before the treatment cycle is reimbursed.
During the treatment cycle, services related to specialist consultations, assisted reproduction procedures, gametes retrieval and preparation, embryo transfer and genetic testing are reimbursed.
The Fund reimburses two cycles of assisted reproductive treatment.
Health Insurance Funds also reimburse medicines for ovarian stimulation. This is a great support for couples, as the medication accounts for almost half the cost of the procedure.
In Lithuania, assisted reproduction services are paid for by the Fund for couples who are married or in a registered partnership, and are available to women who are not older than 42 years.
