Health insurance funds will compensate breast implants
Access to services for women who have had their breasts removed due to cancer is improving. It was decided to reimburse breast implants during breast reconstruction surgery with the funds of the Compulsory Health Insurance Fund (CHIF) from January 1, 2022.
Until now, CHIF funds for women have been used to pay for breast reconstruction operations after breast removal. However, due to the high cost of implants, reimbursement of service did not fully cover the full cost of the operation. Therefore, from next year, women who have lost their breast due to cancer will be reimbursed not only for surgery but also for breast implants. Undoubtedly, this innovation will help hundreds of women to return to normal life, as well as to feel fully fledged.
It has already been decided how this will be financed. It is planned to increase the current cost of reconstructive surgery services for medical institutions by paying additionally for the implant. In this way, medical institutions will purchase implants of the required quality and perform reconstructive surgeries, and the health insurance funds will pay for this with the funds of the CHIF.
It is hoped that this initiative is not only needed for women who have already had their breasts removed due to cancer and need reconstruction surgery using an implant, but also for those for whom removal of the breasts damaged by the tumour and their reconstruction during the same surgery will be performed thus avoiding re-operation.
According to preliminary data of the NHIF, about 300 women undergoing breast reconstruction surgery after cancer surgery could benefit from breast implant compensation each year.
It is planned that the need for funds could amount to about EUR 250 thousand of CHIF funds per year.
