Enteral mixes and improved glucose monitoring systems will be reimbursed by the CHIF
Changes to the reimbursement of medical devices, which come into force on 5 September, will improve the care of enteral nutrition and diabetic patients.
Taking into account the needs of patients and the proposals of the Lithuanian Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, the price list of reimbursable medical aids from 5 September includes special medical foods - enteral mixtures used for enteral feeding of patients at home, when such nutritional therapy is the only way for the patient to receive nutrients and energy, and for those with gastrostomy, ileostomy or nasogastric tube. The Compulsory Health Insurance Fund (CHF) will reimburse 80% of the basic cost of enteral mixes.
The enteral diet at home, reimbursed by the CHIF, will be administered by nutrition therapists from the nutrition therapy team, dieticians, anaesthesiologists, or paediatric intensive care physicians, paediatric or adult gastroenterologists in tertiary level facilities. After the first prescription of these mixtures, other qualified doctors will have the right to extend the prescription afterwards, according to the nutrition plan established. Repeat consultations with a dietician will be required every four to six months.
To facilitate the care of enteral nutrition patients, reimbursement will be provided for the tools needed to provide enteral nutrition by gravity, as well as for low-profile buckle-type gastrostomy tubes, which were previously only available for inpatient or day care use.
From 1 September this year, patients who need enteral feeding also have the possibility to rent enteral feeding pumps (with or without extension system), paid for by the CHIF, for their home healthcare. For more information read HERE.
From 5 September, diabetic patients will be reimbursed for 10 daily replacements of advanced continuous glucose monitoring systems with both a sensor and a transmitter. Until now, the continuous glucose monitoring system has been reimbursed, but the sensors and transmitters have been reimbursed as separate items, which will make it more convenient for patients to use the upgraded systems.
